The Turnitin Workflow

Deleting a Submission

Though it is possible to delete Turnitin submissions, doing so must be treated with extreme caution as once deleted, uploaded work as well as any associated grades and feedback that have been added will be removed from the system permanently. This will also remove any record of the time and date that the original file was uploaded. This action is FINAL and cannot be undone!

Step 1 - Download the original file

Before deleting any submitted work from the Turnitin system, you must download the original file, complete with any grades and annotations that have been added. To do this:

  1. Access the Assignment Inbox
  2. Open the uploaded file you wish to delete to visually check that it is the file that needs to be removed (if this is an anonymous assessment, you will need the student to provide the Paper ID from their submission receipt to locate the correct paper
  3. Close the assignment window and return to the Assignment Inbox
  4. Use the tick box next to the student’s name in the Author field to select the assignment (or use the Paper ID to locate the correct row in an anonymous submission)
  5. Click on the Download Selected button and choose GradeMark PDFs
  6. Download the file to your computer, and open it to check that the file has downloaded correctly

The file you have downloaded should include a cover sheet containing the following details:

  • The assignment title
  • The name of the author (unless the assignment is anonymous)
  • The original file name and file size
  • The date and time of submission
  • The submission ID
  • Word Count
  • Character Count

* Every paper submitted to Turnitin is assigned a unique submission ID. This will match the student submission ID on their submission receipt

Step 2 - Archive the file somewhere safe

Once you are satisfied that you have downloaded the correct file, this must be safely stored so that it can be referred to later if necessary. If you or your department do not have a dedicated secure area where documents can be saved, you can archive files to a folder on your OneDrive account. If you need help in setting this up, or need advice on the best way to use this service, you can contact the ICT Support Desk for additional support.Opens in new window

Archived files must be kept for the duration specified in the relevant Document Management Policy.Opens in new window

Step 3 - Remove the file from Turnitin

  1. From the Assignment Inbox, locate the paper you wish to remove by the author’s name, or by the paper ID if it is an anonymous assignment
  2. Click on the icon with three dots under the options column for that assignment
  3. Choose Delete to remove the submission:
  4. Click the red Confirm button to complete the process:

* Deleting a file will not prevent it being submitted to the global database!
